DIY Hair Gel Made with Flax seed

Flax seed gel

Hello Masses and Happy Monday. Today I'll be sharing a very simple diy tutorial to make your own hair gel using only flax seed. This took less than 10 minutes to make and I absolutely loved the results on my natural 4C hair. To get started here is what you'll need.
  • 1/2 cup Organic flaxseed*
  • 2 cups of water
  •  Medium-sized pot
  •  Wire strainer
  •  Glass dish
  •  Container for storing gel
*note: Flax seeds come in two varieties brown and yellow (golden). I suggest using brown flax seed because it contains higher levels of omega-3 fatty acids.

Step 1.
Combine 1/2 cup of flax seed and 2 cups of water into Medium-sized pot, set temperature to medium, stir frequently as it slowly comes to a boil.

Step 2.
Once the water is at a full boil and the seeds no longer sinking to the bottom, turn down the temperature to a low simmer. At this point, you'll notice the water looks runny and should have a consistency that reminds you of eggs or snot lol. Don't be alarmed by this, your on the right track!

Step 3.
Remove the pot from the heat then strain into a glass dish to let it cool down. I decided to save the leftover seeds to re-use for another batch of gel. Flax seeds is very inexpensive so you can discard the seeds if you like.

Step 4.
Once cooled, transfer your ready to use flaxseed gel into an empty container and your done! For easy access I will suggest using a container that your hand easily fits into, or a bottled container which you can squeeze or pump the gel out of. For longer shelf life store the gel in the fridge and it should last for about 2 weeks.

Flax seed gelSince this was my first time trying out flax seed gel, I chose not to add any oils, butter, or fragrances to get a full understanding on how it works on its own. I just did two strand twists in my hair last night using only the gel and so far I'm very happy with the result. I'll be sharing more on this later on this week. :-) XoXo
